Brief History
The 2011 Formula One season will host the inaugural Indian Grand Prix in October.
The 5.14km long Jaypee International Race Circuit, which is south of New Delhi in the suburb of Noida has been designed by renowned German architect and racetrack designer, Herman Tilke, who has also designed other world class race circuits in Malaysia, Bahrain, China, Turkey, Indonesia, the UAE, South Africa, South Korea and the US.
The circuit has been designed as one of the fastest with two sizeable straights and an interesting mix of corners, which should guarantee a track full of challenges for drivers and engineers alike, as well overtaking opportunities. The circuit is expected to seat up to 150,000 spectator.
In an interesting move, organisers consulted some of the Formula One teams before construction on the circuit began. The track design was run in various factory simulators and as a result several amendments were made in an effort to boost overtaking for the drivers, and excitement for the fans.
Inspiration for the new track have been drawn from rival venues’ best features, including Turkey’s infamous Turn Eight inspiring a double-apex corner, slightly banked. This will form part of a ‘mini-arena’ which alone will accommodate 13,000 spectators.
Formula One have toyed with the idea of Indian Grand Prix for years, with a deal finally being signed in 2003 to host the event near Hyderabad for seven years from 2007 although that soon fell by the wayside.
The track is expected to have cost around $320 million.
