Formula One News » Layout for new Austin USGP circuit revealed Posted on 01/09/2010
The organisers of the new United States Grand Prix at Austin in Texas have released a provisional layout of the circuit, which aims to ‘combine modern features with details reminiscent of traditional races from the 1960′s’.
The track, which has been designed with input from renowned F1 architect Hermann Tilke, will be 3.4 miles long and initial plans show that it will include over 20 turns.
“In the modern era of Grand Prix racing, I think this track layout and the topography will be very special,” said Tavo Hellmund, chairman of Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
“It will have many of the elements of previous ‘classic’ circuits combined with the benefits of FIA-mandated safety for the competitors and spectators alike.
“Add in the amenities fans have come to expect, like rare, multiple-turn viewing opportunities for added value, and you have an ideal, world-class venue.”
Hellmund also reckons it will be a good one for the drivers: “For the competitors, we’ll have all the ingredients necessary,” he continued. “You’ll see fast turns that require commitment from the drivers and technical turns that will test the engineers from a set-up point of view.
“We have a good deal of elevation to make it not only scenic but challenging also, and the view of downtown Austin is wonderful as well.”
Further details of the United States Grand Prix ‘master plan’ and facilities will be revealed in the coming months.
Construction is expected to begin at the end of this year, with the inaugural event at Austin, Texas due to take place in 2012.
