Formula One News » F1 RUMOURS: Hispania to drop Senna again? Posted on 02/09/2010
Bruno Senna may miss a few more races this season, following news that Sakon Yamamoto will keep his drive with Hispania until the end of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship season.
Yamamoto made his F1 comeback at Silverstone back in July and while he did take over Senna’s car for the British Grand Prix, since then he has been in Karun Chandhok’s F110, leaving the Indian on the sidelines for Germany, Hungary and most recently Belgium.
However, paddock gossip currently suggests Chandhok will return for at least two races, and that may leave Senna surplus to requirements.
Indeed, Yamamoto is convinced he will do all six remaining events and confirmed as much this week to Dutch website formule1.nl.
“I will finish the season now,” Yamamoto said. “Whether I replace Bruno or Karun, I don’t know. But it is certain that I will do all of the races. The team is deciding which of them will drive. But my position is not in doubt.”
Chandhok is philosophical about the situation and told espnf1.com recently that he appreciates the position the Spanish squad is in.
“The reasons [for missing races] seem fairly obvious but at the end of the day, the team has its reasons, financial or circumstantial,” Chandhok explained. “I think I will do two or three races before the end of the year but honestly, our focus has now shifted to 2011.
“Over the summer break, we spent time discussing future options and I’m quite optimistic. We’re looking in good shape for 2011.”
Hispania Racing boss, Colin Kolles meanwhile was disappointed the outfit only managed to get one car to the finish in Belgium last weekend.
“It was a turbulent and difficult race with changing conditions,” Kolles reflected. “We started on dry tyres and Sakon was in 13th position in the first laps. Bruno got his front wing damaged in the first lap and so we had to change it in his pit stop, when he also went on intermediate tyres. Unfortunately, his rear left suspension failed and he had to retire early in the race.
“Later, heavy rain was expected and Sakon changed to wet tyres in his second pit stop. I want to thank the mechanics, who did a good job this weekend, especially in the pit stops. Now, we have to focus on the next round in Monza and we hope to show a good performance.”
Senna is also hoping for better in Italy, especially as he only managed 5 laps on Sunday at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
“It was a bit of an unlucky race for us unfortunately,” he continued. “We had a really good start, probably the best we’ve done. But then into the first corner it got a bit tight and my front wing got broken.
“So we came in and put on the intermediate tyres which we need to change back after one lap as the rain stopped. One lap later, the rear left suspension failed.
“So we had everything going against us today. But this is how it goes in motor racing, we just have to look forward to Monza and hopefully it will be better there.”
